The catleia, popularly called orchid, is an epiphyte – a plant that grows on another plant without being parasitic, that is, without harming the one that supports it. Its flowering happens only once a year and its seeds are the smallest among all vegetables. These fragile seeds are spread by the wind and only germinate with the help of a specific fungus, a special type of mold, which provides them with nutrients to grow. The plant is often uprooted from trees and taken to domestic cultivation, where it often dies because the environment is not suitable. But the biggest threat comes from deforestation, which destroys orchid support. Its name means “very fragrant flower”.
