The great scarlet macaw measures from 73 to 95 cm in length, and weighs up to 1.5 kg. The color that gives it its name is predominant, but it still has blue wings with a green band.
When forming a couple, this union is forever – a characteristic of the Psittacidae family. When they have young, the male and female take care to enlarge the holes they make in hollow palm tree trunks or in rocky walls, as a way of protecting them from natural predators.
The devastation of forests and the removal of individuals from their habitat (for trafficking and illegal trade) also threaten their survival. So much so that the hyacinth macaw is already missing from extensive parts of its distribution area.
A curious habit of this bird is the fact that it feeds on earth and clay (usually rich in minerals). The most common explanation is that they do this to neutralize the toxins they ingest when they consume unripe fruit. The great scarlet macaw can live 60 years.
