The anteater is the most nocturnal and arboreal of the anteaters. Like the others, it has a solitary habit, except during the reproductive season and the lactation period.
The species takes a defensive posture when it feels threatened, rising up on its paws hindquarters, which are always clinging to some support, and curling the tail securely around the support, form a tripod.
With up to 40 centimeters, it is the smallest of the anteaters. It weighs about 300 grams and is also known as the silk anteater and dwarf anteater. At 33°C the animal's body temperature is considered low.
The anteater rarely descends to the ground. The species prefers to move around the branches of trees, where it is stabilized by its long tail.
