Its body is longer than that of any other South American wild dog, wolf or fox. On the other hand, its ears are small and rounded, as well as its tail, muzzle and limbs are short. This is the wild dog-vinegar, an animal that is still little observed and studied in nature because it is rare and difficult to see, despite having daytime habits.
The wild dog and vinegar, although it can also have solitary habits, usually live in family groups that vary from three to ten individuals. In captivity, the female of this animal takes 60 to 83 days to give birth and has two to six offspring at a time, which are born grayish in color. Father and mother protect newborns, who breastfeed for approximately 75 days.
As an adult, the wild dog has reddish-brown fur, and on the head, the color is slightly reddish-gold. This species feeds from small vertebrates – such as rodents – to medium and large animals, such as coatis, agouti, pacas, capybaras, small deer and rheas.
The wild dog-vinegar usually shelters in tree stumps, fallen trunks, burrows on flat ground or ravines. To demarcate its territory, it does something to make a lot of acrobats drop-jawed: it leans on the forelegs, lifts the trunk and hind legs, and then urinates on a stone or a tree. This animal does this to release its urine from a higher point than it would reach if it were on all fours.
This, however, is not the only skill of the wild dog, which, from time to time, proves to be a good imitator. It is able to reproduce the sound its prey emits, attracting them to capture them.
But this curious animal is threatened with extinction. All because fires and deforestation have destroyed the place that is home to this species, as well as its different sources of food. Environmental authorities need to take urgent action if they want to preserve the wild dog and its habitat.
