Largest land mammal in South America is 'Vulnerable' in the wild; cubs have a high chance of being reintroduced in Rio de Janeiro when they become adults
The tapir (terrestrial tapirus), the largest land mammal in South America, is more fragile than it looks. The up to two meters in length and 300 kilos of a robust body are unfortunately not able to protect the species against the main threats encountered in free life: deforestation and fragmentation of forests, pedestrians being run over on highways, hunting and burning, among others. others.
All these problems, triggered by man, made the species Vulnerable in the classification given by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). In Brazil, tapirs are considered extinct in the South and threatened in the Cerrado.
Because of this, several projects spread across the country bring together specialists in an attempt to save the species from extinction and ensure that they freely occupy their natural domains again. The birth of Zeus, a male tapir, in early August at the conservationist breeding farm Trijunção Farm, located at the junction between three Brazilian states (Minas Gerais, Bahia and Goiás), is another important step in the fight for the survival of the mammal.
