In March, river levels rise and felines take shelter in trees
Researchers from the Mamirauá Institute are going to take advantage of the rainy season in the Amazon rainforest to monitor jaguars. In March, the level of the rivers rises and reduces the availability of land for the cats, who take shelter in the trees.
Traps are set with camouflaged loops in the foliage to capture the animals. The jaguars are immobilized for the installation of a collar that allows satellite location monitoring. Thus, the research groups can approach in canoes and observe the animals, which is more difficult to carry out during periods of drought.
From observation and movement data, researchers will have more information to understand the ecological needs of the jaguar in the Amazon.
The Mamirauá Institute is a social organization promoted and supervised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
