Coral reefs are associations between animals and plants that inhabit the seas. They are structures composed of limestone secreted by the individuals that compose them. Reefs occur in environments with temperatures around 20 to 28ºC. They inhabit shallow waters and can have different forms of organization, at depths of up to 60 meters. As they are dependent on light to carry out photosynthesis, they need clear water.
As they are very sensitive to changes in water temperature and color, they can be used as pollution markers. For example, when there is an oil spill at sea there can be a huge loss of these reefs!
