The mammal was seen in the area of convergence with Antarctica
Born in Brazil in 2002, the right whale was first seen in a feeding area on the South Georgia Islands, in the convergence region with Antarctica, in the South Atlantic. The discovery was possible due to the joint work started in 2018 with England. The mammal was sighted in January of this year.
The discovery was announced this week by biologist Karina Groch, research coordinator of the Project Franca Austral (ProFranca), during the virtual meeting of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Sponsored by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Environment, the meeting will run until the 14th of May.
The right whale was cataloged under the number B139-02 and was seen twice more in Brazil, in 2005 and 2007, this time when it had its first calf.
According to the biologist, the number of right whales in the country has been growing. She highlighted the need for strong conservation action to ensure the survival and recovery of the species, which is still considered endangered due to intensive hunting until the beginning of the 1990s. 1970. Data from the project reveal that, in Argentina, in the last 10 years, there has been a high mortality of puppies in the year of birth.
A new line of research will be started and will address the activities that may be impacting the species, including entanglement in fishing gear. “In the case of right whales, it does not cause death for the individual, but it is a concern, because it causes stress for the animal and harm to the fisherman”. The idea is to find, in the medium and long term, a way to minimize this loss for both the fisherman and the whale.
