NAME:
Read:
As its name says, this bird is endemic to the Caatinga, being found in all the states of the Northeast and in the north of Espírito Santo. It lives in dry forests and arboreal Caatingas with rocky enclaves.
It has the habit of resting on sandy beaches in the Northeast or on black slabs in Espírito Santo. It is one of the few that fly just before sunset, in wandering movements, rising and falling and often flying in circles.
The diminutive of the name also conveys its size. The species is easily recognized by its small size, measuring between 16 and 20 cm in length and weighing about 26 grams. Both sexes have a white spot on the wing, but only the male has the tip of the last two tails also white.
It feeds on insects at dawn and dusk. It hunts with its mouth always open, and thus collects a large number of flying insects, mainly moths.
In reproduction, the two eggs are laid directly on the ground, usually without further care. A fascinating fact is that these eggs almost always have the color of the terrain and, like the species, are very well camouflaged, making it difficult to find them.
