In 1703, Alexander Selkirk joined the crew of a corsair (a ship found by the government to fight enemy vessels). Upon reaching the west coast of South America in September 1704, Selkirk fell out with the commander and asked him to leave him on one of the islands of the Juan Fernández archipelago. He soon changed his mind, but the commander did not accept his apology and abandoned him on the deserted beach.
