The only representative of the genus Eira, it is popularly known as papa-mel, as the sweet is one of its favorite foods.
From the family of otters and otters, the irara (Barbarian threshing floor) is an omnivorous mammal present in all Brazilian biomes. However, there is nothing in common, after all, it is the only representative of the genre Eira.
Despite its forestry habits, it has been found in orchards, plantations and other areas modified by man. Ease of adaptation is one of its specialties. It eats everything from fruits to rodents, insects, small vertebrates and birds. Honey is also part of their diet. Hence it is popularly known as papa-mel. Even its scientific name Eira, in Guarani, means “honey eater”.
The irara is an active predator, with smell being its main method of detecting prey. It is also an excellent explorer, being able to travel two to eight kilometers per day. Due to its exploratory nature, it prefers to occupy large areas rather than demarcate a territory. He carries out most of his activities during the day, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
It has been seen in pairs, but its habits are more solitary. When a group exists, they are usually made up of the female and her cubs. Individuals move cunningly both on the ground and in trees. Its tail, which measures up to 47 centimeters, is responsible for providing balance and keeping the body upright. It easily hangs with its hind legs and uses its tail to pick up fruit. It has swimming membranes on its paws, which is why it also has the ability to swim. It has dark fur all over its slender and muscular body.
