NAME:

The lumberjack

Long ago in a green and silent forest, next to a stream of crystal clear water and sparkling rapids, lived a poor woodcutter who worked hard to support his family. Every day he took the arduous trek into the forest, carrying his sharp ax to his shoulder. He always left whistling happily, because he knew that as long as he was healthy and had the ax, he could earn enough to buy all the bread the family needed.

One day he was cutting a huge oak tree near the river. The splinters flew away and the noise of the ax echoed through the forest with such force that it seemed there were a dozen lumberjacks at work. After some time, he decided to rest a little, leaned the ax against the tree and turned to sit but stumbled in an old, gnarled root, and before he could catch it, the ax fell down the bank into the river!

The poor woodcutter scanned the waters trying to find the axe, but that stretch was too deep, the river continued to flow, with the same tranquility as always, hiding the lost treasure.

– What should I do? I lost the ax! How will I feed my children? - Shouted the woodcutter.

No sooner had she finished speaking than a beautiful woman emerged from the creek, it was the river fairy who had come to the surface when she heard the lament.

– Why are you suffering so much? - She asked, in a friendly tone, the woodcutter told what happened and she dived then, appearing on the surface seconds later with a silver axe.

– Is this the ax you lost?

The woodcutter thought of all the beautiful things he could buy his children with all that silver, but the ax wasn't his, so he shook his head, saying,

– My ax was made of steel.

The water fairy placed the silver ax on the river bank and dived again, soon returned and showed another ax to the woodcutter:

– Maybe this ax is yours?

- No, it is not! This one is gold! It's worth a lot more than mine.

The water fairy placed the golden ax on the river bank, dived once more, rose to the surface again, this time brought the lost ax.

- This is mine! It's my yes, without a doubt!

“Yours,” said the water fairy, “and now the other two are yours too, they are a gift from the river for your telling the truth.

And in the evening, the woodcutter took the arduous walk back home with the three axes at his back, whistling and thinking of all the good things they would bring to his family.
