Cordel is a literary genre that uses rhymed words and lots of imagination. Traditionally the format of a string is a booklet and it contains verses similar to poetry. These verses tell stories that can be invented or not, it can be the story of someone they know, even a fantasy, drama, adventure, whatever the author wants to create.
The name cordel is original from Portugal and was chosen because, after they were ready, these books were hung on strings to be sold.
This type of literature came from Europe and, in Brazil, it became known between the 50s and 60s. In our country, it started in the Northeast region, mainly in the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará. Today, this art is known throughout Brazil.
