There is a very, very old story, from the days of knights in shining armor, about an ordinary young man who was too afraid to test his skill with weapons at the local tournament.
One day, his friends wanted to play a trick on him and gave him a sword, saying it had a very old magical power. The man who wielded it would never be defeated in combat.
To their surprise, the young man ran into the tournament and put the gift to use, winning every match. No one had ever seen such speed and daring in the sword.
With each tournament, the news of his mastery spread, and he was soon acclaimed as the first knight of the kingdom.
Finally, thinking it wouldn't do any harm, one of his friends revealed the joke, confessing that the instrument wasn't magical at all, it was just a common sword.
Immediately the young knight was seized with terror.
Standing at the edge of the combat area, her legs trembled, her breath caught in her throat, and her fingers lost their strength. Unable to continue believing in the sword, he no longer believed in himself.
And he never competed again.
