On May 1, 1886, there was a demonstration by thousands of workers on the streets of Chicago, United States, to demand the reduction of the working day from 13 to 8 hours a day. On the same day, a general strike broke out in that country. On May 3, a new demonstration by the strikers was repressed by the police, resulting in the death of some protesters. The next day, during another protest, an unknown person dropped a bomb that killed seven police officers. In retaliation, police fired into the crowd, killing twelve people and injuring dozens.
