The compass, invented by the Chinese and improved by the Europeans, is nothing more than a magnetized needle that rotates freely on a compass rose. Because of the earth's magnetic field, the compass needle always points north, wherever the navigator is. Thus, it is possible to guide a map and discover the direction to take and the direction of the route to follow, regardless of day or night, the visibility of the sky or the existence of other references.
