Acid rain happens when water comes into contact with sulfur dioxide particles from pollution, turning into sulfuric acid. This type of rain causes serious damage to land and water, not to mention the damage to buildings and anything else that comes into contact with “acid water”. The first observation of this phenomenon was made in 1852 by scholar Robert Angus Smith. Angus identified a relationship between the corrosive rain that fell in Manchester, England (an important industrial city) and pollution. In 1972, the term “acid rain” was used for the first time.
