The governor is the representative of the executive branch at the state level. He is responsible for articulating the state administration with the municipal and federal governments.

The governor must represent his state in all relationships, whether legal, political or administrative. The position also defends the interests of the state, seeking regional improvements, together with the president.

Who can be governor?

Every four years, the general elections in Brazil, they aim to elect various political positions in the Executive and Federal and State Legislative branches. One of the elected positions is that of governor.

Not just anyone can hold the position, to be governor candidates must meet the following requirements to run for the position:

  • present Brazilian nationality;
  • be literate;
  • be at least 30 years old;
  • be in full exercise of political rights (do not have any suspended political rights);
  • having carried out the electoral enlistment;
  • have electoral domicile in the state for which you wish to run for office (the person may be a native of another state, but must be a candidate in the state in which he/she votes);
  • be affiliated with the party for which you are running for at least six months before the election.

How Much Does a Governor Earn in 2019?

The salaries of the governors of Brazil, as well as any other public servant, cannot exceed the income ceiling of ministers of the Federal Supreme Court.

In addition, governors cannot receive any other form of income other than the salary that, in each state, is stipulated by the deputies who occupy the Legislative Assembly.

On average, Brazilian governors earn R$ 19,867 per month, which is equivalent to 21 minimum wages. However, this amount may vary from state to state.

  • Paraná – Carlos Roberto Massa – R$ 33,763 (highest paid governor in Brazil)
