Rubem Fonseca, one of the greatest Brazilian writers, was a short story writer, novelist, essayist and screenwriter. Born in Juiz de Fora (MG) in 1925, he moved to Rio de Janeiro when he was still a child. He graduated from the School of Legal and Social Sciences at the University of Brazil (currently UFRJ) and was a police commissioner between 1952 and 1958.
This professional experience influenced his work, since the author stood out mainly in the police genre, mixing elements of reality, violence, historical characters and strong criticism Social. Among the most famous books are “Agosto”, “Bufo e Spallanzani” and “O Caso Morel”, in addition to the collections of short stories and chronicles “Feliz Ano Novo”, “O Cobrador” and “Pequenas Criaturas”.
Rubem Fonseca won the Jabuti Prize six times and, in 2003, the Camões Prize, the most important prize in Portuguese-language literature, for his body of work. Brazil said goodbye to him on April 15, 2020, the victim of a heart attack, at the age of 94.
