Expert explains possible reason for behavior; blatant went viral on the internet.
While many birds spend the day looking for resources to build their nests, a video that recently went viral on the internet shows that the nine-banded armadillo (
Dasypus novemcinctus) has a hobby unusual: collecting leaves and branches. This curious behavior has drawn the attention of researchers. In the image, he appears picking up the leaves one by one while jumping and accumulating the material at the height of his belly. Although the video was recorded in another country, Brazilian researchers have already recorded the same behavior of the species here.
According to researcher Rodolfo Magalhães, the behavior has already been seen for the species and probably this 'hoarder' will take all this material to his lair, where he promises focus on repairs. “Probably, the dry leaves will be used to cover their nest. A common behavior for this species, ”he says.
Magalhães still believes that this behavior helps to control the animal's temperature. That is, they would be responsible for making the armadillos' home warmer. “But this is more of a hypothesis taking into account that there are currently no more specific studies on this”, he explains.
The nine-banded armadillo is found throughout much of Central and South America, including the Amazon region and the Paraná River basin. They are called 'narrow armadillos' because of the sound they make while digging, which resembles the sound of a chicken clucking.
