In addition to its large companions, this hawk is easy to identify by its long tail and the white spot on its wings, seen during flight.
Males and females are distinguished by the color of the tarsi and wax, around the eyes and over the nose, which varies between bright yellow and pale pink.
With up to 45 centimeters in length and a wingspan that reaches 74 centimeters, the bird parades its plumage yellowish-white of the head and body and the back dark brown across the farms, pastures and open fields throughout the Brazil.
The varied menu of the species, also known as white caracara and pinhé hawk, includes insects, frogs, lizards, chicks of other birds and dead animals. But what draws attention is the taste for ticks, botflies and other parasites removed from the back of large mammals.
The relationship between animals is positive for both sides, since cattle, tapirs and capybaras, for example, are free of ticks, while the bird has a full belly.
In the reproductive period, the tick builds large nests, made with dry branches, in palm trees or other trees. The structure houses five to seven eggs incubated by the female for up to 23 days.
During the incubation period and after the hatchlings are born, the male takes care of feeding the female and the newborns.
