The flatter fields that are located in the south of the state of Rio Grande do Sul are called pampas. In them there is a countryside vegetation, which looks like an immense green carpet. In the pampas species that measure up to one meter in height predominate. Grasses are common, which sometimes turn fields into large grasses.
In the pampas, vegetation can then be considered sparse and species-poor. It becomes richer near higher areas. On the slopes of the plateaus, there are forests with large pine trees and other trees, such as the cabreúva, the grapia, the caroba, the red angico and the cedar. In these regions, called Campos alto, the Araucaria Forest is found, where the predominant plant species is the Paraná Pine.
