Corals are marine animals from the cnidarian group that attract attention for their beauty and vibrant colors. But did you know that those responsible for this coloring are microscopic beings? Yes, it's algae, known as zooxanthellae. They live in the coral cells that give these animals their color. They also provide food and oxygen, products of photosynthesis, to corals. And, on the other hand, corals shelter the zooxanthellae, protecting them, in addition to providing carbon dioxide and nutrients.
