The roots of many plants have fungi that grow along with or within them. This relationship, which is called mycorrhiza, is beneficial to both. On the one hand, fungi help the plant to absorb water and minerals from the soil, which are essential elements for its development. Plants end up providing fungi with sugars and other compounds that are produced in photosynthesis, that is, in the process of generating energy from sunlight.
Plants that are grown in soil rich in mycorrhizae do best. Thus, this association brings benefits even for us! After all, our agriculture would be much less productive without mycorrhizae.
