In December 1940, just over two years before creating The little Prince

 and four years before disappearing on an air mission, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry writes letter to a hostage. Having just escaped from his homeland devastated by World War II, the author embarks on a ship voyage from France to the United States, passing through Portugal.

What was to be the preface to a book by friend Léon Werth becomes a stand-alone work – a poignant meditation on the atrocities the war was inflicting on the human soul.

Published in 1943, letter to a hostage manages to convey all the melancholy of war and exile. A short, blunt text about genuine friendship, it turns the prosaic and the terrifying into a matter of literature.
