According to The Guardian, the individual was weighed in a clinic located in the Sicilian capital, Palermo. National Police General Pasquale Angelosanto stated: “Today, January 16, the Carabineros arrested the fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro inside a sanatorium in Palermo, where he was undergoing treatments therapeutic”.

Denaro boasted that he had committed enough murders to "fill a cemetery", so he was sentenced in 2002 to life in prison. The crimes that led him to receive such a sentence were the murders of two prosecutors in 1992: Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone.

When convicted, the mobster had already been on the run for some time. Despite being wanted for so long, the subject could be given a new sentence, given his role in the 1993 bombings in Florence, Milan and Rome. These attacks resulted in ten people being killed and 93 injured.

Denaro was called “the most wanted man in Europe” and became better known to the common population after appear in a documentary series for the streaming service Netflix, called “World’s Most Wanted” World)". The mobster was also called Diabolik for displaying a lifestyle based on sports cars and branded clothing, similar to that of this comic book villain.

Diabolik is suspected of having performed 50 homicides, being considered the greatest godfather of the Sicilian mafia after the deaths of Bernardo Provenzano and Salvatore Riina in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The mobster was arrested at the age of 60. By all indications, he will undergo more trials and should receive other sentences.
