According to data from the World Health Organization for 2002, 1.3 billion people on the planet (mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions) are infected with hookworm and 65,000 die from anemia associated with disease. Popularly known as yellowing, the disease became famous thanks to Monteiro Lobato, when he created the character Jeca Tatu – hillbilly considered by everyone lazy and stupid, but when he finds himself sick with yellowing, he treats himself, gets cured and becomes a farmer rich.
