The unhappiest jobs are the loneliest jobs. They don't require as much interaction with other people, nor do they offer specific conditions for building healthy relationships with co-workers.
The person responsible for the research was Robert Waldinger, a professor and psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, also acting as director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, being one of the oldest studies on happiness, as stated by CNBC Make It.
The study has been conducting research since 1938, gathering mental health data on more than 700 volunteers from around the world. For each of these workers, the scientists asked questions about their personal and professional lives every two years.
All these cases were responsible to come to a conclusion about the case.
Finally, the study concludes that a well-paid salary, healthy life and professional success do not guarantee a happier life, although they are indispensable attributes.
What keeps jobs happy are the positive relationships people build over the years.
Waldinger promotes that interaction is a crucial point that workers need to have, as it is “a critical social need that must be met in all aspects of our lives […] being more connected with people is a satisfaction to do a better job”, said the researcher.
Solitary work refers to jobs in which people work alone, just as there are also people who can work in a team and still manage to feel isolated by the absence of interaction.
The creation of social and interpersonal connections is a necessity to alleviate the feeling of tension and loneliness, as the research concluded.
