The WHO recommendation is based on a systematic review of available evidence indicating that the use of Sugar-free sweeteners do not provide long-term benefits in reducing body fat in adults or children. This list includes several types of sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose, stevia and others.
In an official statement, Anvisa stressed that the WHO study is not intended to review the safety profile of sugar-free sweeteners. The recommendation is considered conditional, as more information is needed to assess the consequences and benefits of its use.
The Agency suggests that other countries can discuss more about the decision, also considering the local consumption of sweeteners. Anvisa is committed to gathering this information and promoting a comprehensive analysis to support future decisions on the subject.
According to Anvisa, it is essential to emphasize that the agency is responsible for authorizing the use of sweeteners in Brazil, carrying out safety assessments of these products.
The analysis was carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the Expert Committee on the Safety Assessment of Food Additives of FAO and WHO. Anvisa emphasized the importance of these assessments to ensure consumer safety in relation to the use of sweeteners.
