The bird with exuberant feathers, in a shade of pool blue, caught the attention of collectors of exotic animals. It was mainly through the illegal removal of the Spix's Macaws from their habitat and because of the deforestation of the Brazilian Caatinga that they were considered extinct in the wild.
In order to try to change this situation and prevent this species of bird from disappearing from the planet, Brazil, in partnership with a non-governmental institution in Germany, is going to repatriate 50 blue macaws.
The president of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) celebrates the closing of the agreement, which had already been under discussion for 10 years.
Sonora: “It is an important achievement for Brazil because we are going to reintroduce a species that was extinct. And, depending on how the species develops, they will be reintroduced in Juazeiro, Bahia.”
The blue macaws should arrive in Brazil between October and November this year on a chartered flight. When they disembark, they will undergo a quarantine for their health status to be assessed.
After this process, about 15 of these birds will be selected to be reintegrated into nature and will be monitored for the rest of their lives. The rest will be part of the research to increase the number of specimens of the species.
ICMBio's environmental analyst, Camile Lugarine, told us a little about the process of reintegrating the Spix's Macaws into nature:
Sonora: “And this is the first reintroduction of wild birds without a free-living population. That means there will be loss of individuals. And this will serve to monitor and learn to improve reintroduction. So, there will be several reintroduction events.”
[…]
Currently, there are 163 specimens of the Spix's Macaw in the world, all living in legal captivity. Most of them live in Germany. Only 13 specimens, two of which are newborns, are in Brazil, on a reserve in Minas Gerais.
