He knows it's you because of the routine – like arriving at the same time every day after school. Also, dogs have highly developed hearing and sense of smell, which helps them recognize who is coming. Often, the connection with the human beings who live with the dog is so great that it can get sick if the owners have to leave it behind, as when moving to another city.
