Read this excerpt from the text “Deforestation in the Amazon”:

The escalation of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is mainly due to the activities of mining, logging, cattle-raising and agro-industry. The latter has grown exponentially in the Amazon region, motivated by the low cost of land and labor and the high international price of some products, such as soybeans (…). Specifically, it is known that the removal of vegetation from the Amazon forest has consequences on a global scale (the climate of the Earth), regional (erosion control) and local (disappearance of species of importance to the population).
