Legends, mystery and much controversy surround the discovery of the bark of a tree called cinchona, native to the Andes region of South America. Quinine, a white powder extracted from this bark, was the first drug used on a large scale in combat to malaria – a terrible disease that has killed between 150 and 300 million people in the last 100 years alone!
