Hawaii Governor David Ige signed a law on July 4 that prohibits the use of certain sunscreens in Hawaii. Citing scientific research, David Ige argues that product brands contain chemicals that harm Hawaiian marine life, particularly its coral reefs.
Corals provide shelter and food for most fish and other animals in the sea. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, substances present in sunscreens, harm corals, by changing their color, for example. These chemicals are also present in lip balms and some makeup products.
The new law takes effect almost three years from now, on January 1, 2021. […] The main argument is a study carried out by the Environmental Laboratory Haereticus, an NGO (No Organization Government), which proved the damage of chemical compounds to corals and served as the basis for the creation of law.
