NAME:

Martha Medeiros: The right person

Some sentences spread without us knowing who the real author is. This is the case of While the right man doesn't come along, I'm having fun with the wrong ones, which I heard for the first time on a Marília Gabriela program or did I read it on a t-shirt? That the phrase is witty, there is no question, but it is a trap: believing that there is the right person is the reason for our relationship problems. Why do we insist on believing in legends?

This abstract entity - the right person - is the one who will understand all your quirks, will guess when you want to be silent, will have the body and face that you idealized in your romantic delusions and your mother - yours, not hers - will approve your choice as soon as you open the door to the living room. visit. It will only take a traced with the eye and soon she will wink at you as if to say: now yes.
Now what? Now you think you've found someone you won't ever fight and who will fit in perfectly with your ambitious search for the right person, the one (attention, spoiler) that doesn't exist.
The right person for you is the wrong one. Remember the wrong person?
He lived in the outback of Judas. Laugh out loud. I didn't really understand the movies you liked, but I made delightful comments about them. I was much older than you. Or much younger than you. He didn't stop at any job and his ex collection was worrisome. I miss the wrong person.
He never got a single gift right ─ but he remembered all the dates. After an hour and a half on the phone, I wanted to talk a little more and was sad if you suggested they hang up. How you loved the wrong person.
I didn't know any of his friends. Nor you hers. I smoked too much. Or drank too much. Or both. But he has never been through the police. The craving for astrological predictions was a bit exaggerated, and it was time to learn how to clean up the mess that was her apartment, but she never failed to get out of the scented bath. And wetting the bedroom floor, of course. It was the most welcome mistake for that off-season moment of yours, wasn't it?
Until the right person came along. The whole family celebrated and the friends breathed a sigh of relief: now yes, you had someone your height, now yes, you would no longer have to go through the ups and downs, now yes, no more a shack, no surprises. Now yes, a standard couple.
I can almost see you, a few months from now, wearing a T-shirt that says, "As long as the wrong person doesn't come along, I'll get bored with the right ones."
