The rules for exemption from paying the tax vary from state to state. For example, vehicles begin to receive IPVA exemption for manufacturing time from 10 years in Goiás, Acre, Roraima and Rio Grande do Norte.
In other states, the exemption only takes effect after 15 years of manufacture. Some states that adopt this standard are: Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Paraíba, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Sergipe and Tocantins.
The state of Mato Grosso adopted the period of 18 years of manufacture to grant the exemption, while Alagoas only exempts cars whose possession occurred before December 31, 2000. In Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, the period is 20 years.
In Santa Catarina, vehicles manufactured until 1985 are exempt. Pernambuco and Minas Gerais, in turn, adopt a progressive reduction regime. Therefore, you need to pay attention not only to the year of manufacture, but to the rules of the state where you live as well.
The IPVA is a tax intended for public administration expenses, whose body responsible for collection is the Detran, which defines the deadlines for payment, including those who opted for the modality of single quota.
This is a way in which the owner of the vehicle can pay the amount in cash and be entitled to discounts of up to 15%. Therefore, if your car is not yet exempt from IPVA in 2023, this may be a good option for you to save money!
