The project in question says that all foods that are considered ultra-processed are those in which the manufacturing process involves many processing steps, which is not interesting for our health.
In public schools, for example, ideally, the supply of food should be in accordance with the PNAE – National School Meals Program.
As a result, if schools do not comply with this program and with this bill, they will be able to be notified and, with that, they will have a deadline to regulate the supply of food. Otherwise, they will be fined, in the case of private schools.
A child's daily food consumption often takes place mostly within the school, and precisely because of this, this environment is very responsible for what he consumes.
Therefore, by restricting ultra-processed foods in the child's eating routine, many benefits can be observed in their health, such as, for example, reducing the rate of childhood obesity.
Rose Fernandes, PSC councilor, is one of the main authors of this project and participated in many debates so that the topic was discussed in its entirety.
After many meetings, a consensus was established in a positive way, where everyone understood that the important thing is to try our best to replace ultra-processed foods that can be offered in schools for more natural foods that bring benefits to children's health.
The objective is precisely to preserve the health of children within the school environment. The project, then, was approved as a collective decision, in which not only children benefit, but also the entire State of Rio de Janeiro.
The role of the school in this case is to follow all the guidelines and norms established by the project that was approved, offering the best possible foods within the school environment, either through canteens or cafeterias.
Thus, children's health can be preserved and the fight against childhood obesity will be a reality in schools in Rio de Janeiro.
