The celebration of the World Day of Universal Fellowship and Peace takes place on January 1st all over the world. But each people celebrates in their own way. How about getting to know manifestations of other cultures?
In Japan, the New Year is called Shogatsu. There, the celebrations begin on New Year's Eve, when families eat pasta. Also part of the Japanese New Year's Eve celebrations is the first visit to a shrine or temple to ask for luck and happiness.
In Brazil, the most famous celebration is the fireworks display in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Thousands of Brazilians and tourists go to the beach to watch the show that starts at midnight.
In other countries, such as the Netherlands, people have the habit of setting off fireworks from their own homes. In Scotland, there are many special customs associated with the New Year, such as the tradition of being the first person to set foot on your neighbor's property, known as first-footing (first step, in English). There it is also common to give symbolic gifts to wish you good luck, including cookies. In English-speaking countries, singing or playing music Auld Lang Syne, farewell song, is very popular just after midnight.
