Used during Antiquity to store information, they are not the same
Surrounded by social media, you may not realize that there was a time when communications were far from instantaneous. Worse, there were no telegrams, letters or carrier pigeons. One of those responsible for this social revolution was papyrus, whose invention is credited to the Egyptians. It coexisted with the scrolls, which are the parents of paper. But what is the difference between papyrus and parchment?
To understand, let us travel to Egypt, around the third millennium b. Ç. There, an aquatic plant called Cyperus papyrus it had a stem on which you could write and draw. For this, it was necessary to cut it into several strips, which were glued together, polished and put to dry. From that came the papyrus. It used to be that several sequential sheets were used for larger works, a habit that can be considered an ancestor of today's books.
Parchment is a gift from the Greeks. It was made from the skin of sheep and sheep, treated with lime and stretched. It is believed to have emerged around the 2nd century BC. Ç. in the city of Pergamon (now Bergama, Turkey). Like papyrus, parchment was neither cheap nor quick to produce. But it had the advantage of being “more solid and more flexible than papyrus and allowing it to be scraped and erased”, says author Albert Labarre in his work History of the Book.
In the 4th century, because it was less work, parchment surpassed papyrus and reigned supreme. That was how it was until 751, when the Arabs stole the idea of the role of the Chinese – in China, it had existed since the year 105. The role was then popularized in Europe, and from there to the world. “Still today, there are papyrus boats in Ethiopia, and it was again produced in Egypt, as a way of attracting tourists,” says librarian Rosany Azeredo, postgraduate in Information Science with a work on the origins of paper.
