6 tips to increase your “luck” in life

Along with the pandemic, existential crises have emerged with the purpose of showing that people are not satisfied with their lives, in general. People are not happy with their careers, the environment they live in, the country and other factors, so they are just living on automatic. But Krumboltz's event theory shows you how to increase your luck. Keep reading and learn more about her.

Happenstance: The Happening Theory

Chance is typically defined as a circumstance that happens by luck, serendipity, or some other random chance. The Happenstance Theory for career development was developed by psychologist John Krumboltz, but it applies to life in general (Krumboltz and Levin, 2004).

This theory recognizes the reality that chance plays a significant role in everyone's career and life path. Unfortunately, career counselors and coaches rarely recognize this or prepare their clients to take advantage of unknown opportunities.

Even worse, these methods are processes that are often designed to reduce the impact of the incident. Chance embraces all the unforeseen opportunities that luck can provide.

Advice for you to increase your "luck"

Based on the work of Krumboltz and that of Yuval Harari (2004) in his masterpiece Sapiens, it is possible to get a vision of how to increase your “luck” and prepare for opportunities still unknown. Check out some of them below:

  • Try to get involved in various activities that are legal and that can be beneficial, always keeping an eye on new opportunities;
  • Be a curious person, as it is the vital force of discovery and growth that enables changes and self-knowledge, fundamental aspects for new paths;
  • Be willing to get into situations where you have less control than you would normally want. After all, only then can you reap the unknown opportunities;
  • Overcome complacency with a belief in your own abilities. Soon, if you believe that you are destined for a better life, it will be so;
  • Create support networks with people, as this connection takes care of health, longevity, generates opportunity and resilience, while absence predicts depression;
  • Develop yourself flexibility and tolerance for change to adapt to any situation.
