It hasn't been long since the outbreak was confirmed in Tanzania and, according to Tanzanian Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu, so far, eight people have been infected. Of that number, five died and three are still undergoing treatment.
What is the Marburg virus all about?
It is a highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever. Studies say that it belongs to the same family as the disease known as ebola. It is capable of causing death within a few days, with an incubation period of 2 to 21 days, and the rate of mortality can reach up to 88%.
In addition to Tanzania, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that in Equatorial Guinea, an active outbreak has also been confirmed.
Is the disease spreading quickly?
As Ummy said, it was possible to control the disease, so it did not continue to infect new people in the affected area. The confirmed cases came from the cities of Bulinda and Butayaibega.
After all, what were the symptoms that the victims had?
Tumaini Nagu, a Tanzanian government medicine specialist, said the patients had fever, vomiting, bleeding from various parts of the body and kidney failure.
Professionals advised Tanzanians not to touch potential patients and their fluids. In addition, they stated that they report any cases to the health authorities.
Where else has the virus been detected?
Are there any preventive measures?
Unfortunately, there is still no vaccine or specific treatment for the virus. Therefore, the situation is more complicated and the mortality rate will remain high.
