Students who have debts with the Student Financing Fund (FIES) have the option to pay them off with discounts of up to 99%. This was made possible by Provisional Measure (MP) 1,090/2021, which specifically deals with the renegotiation of debts related to the program. All contracts signed up to the second half of 2017 are eligible for the benefit. Check in this article who is eligible to receive FIES discount.

According to the text of the provisional measure, students who have legal debts can also benefit from the decision. The discount of up to 99% is especially beneficial for students registered in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico). Reductions in amounts are made through the reduction of fines and penalties.
The expectation is that more than 2 million students will benefit from the renegotiation of debts and discounts to eliminate outstanding FIES debts.
Debts can be divided up to 150 times. According to the MP, payment terms and discounts will be based on the specific circumstances of each student, therefore, each case will be treated differently.
Another factor taken into account is the delay in payment of installments. The 99% discount is reserved for students participating in CadÚnico or who have been approved for Auxílio Brasil. Reductions reach 77% for remaining students who have debts that are more than 360 days old.
In other cases, FIES deductions will be made upon loss of interest and fines, in addition to a 12% discount on the total amount of the debt, but only for students who do not delay the payment.
Simulating a renegotiation with the bank where the student maintains the student loan agreement is the recommended action for everyone who wants to get some kind of debt discount.
