Neoenergia is an electricity company headquartered in Brazil, one of the main energy distributors in the country, as it serves more than 14 million customers in 18 Brazilian states. It is also one of the main generators of renewable energy.
As of the most recent court decision, which was taken and disclosed, the company Neoenergia will no longer be able to suspend the supply of energy for non-payment of debts for 90 days. If the decision is not strictly followed, the company may be fined R$5,000 per consumer unit.
Still according to Justice, the change must already appear in the next invoices. With this, the amount spent for the month must be presented separately from the amount in arrears, which follows pending, that is, there must be a separate charge for the installment of debts negotiated with the company.
Another issue decided is that the company will have to reconnect the energy of consumers who had their supply cut off due to non-payment for more than 90 days. If Neoenergia fails to comply with this last determination, the fine will be even higher: R$ 20,000 per consumer unit.
According to data released by the Public Ministry of the Federal District, 56,856 consumers have an active debt installment plan in the Federal District.
In a note, the company expressed itself on the matter:
“The decision published by the MP only reinforces the procedure already carried out by the distributor.”
Neoenergia was founded in 1997 and, since then, has grown rapidly by expanding its presence throughout Brazil. In 2019, the company went public on the São Paulo Stock Exchange (B3) and in New York (NYSE), becoming one of the largest companies in the electricity sector in Latin America.
