This last point, in particular, has defenses and accusations on all sides, and its main idea is to give more autonomy to the student. However, some education professionals accuse the new curriculum model of rejecting some subjects.
The new high school will divide the content of high school subjects into two strands. One of them is the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), which will be the same for all students in the country and will also be mandatory. The other part will be chosen by the students themselves, who will have to choose an emphasis.
In this way, students will be able to choose between language subjects, exact and natural sciences, human sciences, or also technical education. With this, the Ministry of Education seeks to strengthen the link between school and academia and the job market.
However, the most conservative sectors of the teachers' unions fear that subjects such as philosophy and sociology will be scrapped in the new curriculum. For this reason, educators reacted from the beginning of the project so that the new secondary education would not be approved.
According to the Schedule for the Implementation of the New Secondary School, of July 2021, first-year students will receive the new secondary education in 2022. Thus, the government will be able to observe what should be modified during this first experience. And then, in the years 2023 and 2024, the implementation in the other two years of high school follows. Therefore, this year we are already going to contemplate a little of how this new form of teaching will work in Brazil.
