To the rest of the world Hobbes is just a toy, but to Calvin he is an inseparable friend, with whom he can talk about anything.
Despite its interesting background, “suddenly” the story stopped being published, a fact that left many fans of the work sad and without understanding why that was happening.
Before being cancelled, the comic was published in more than two thousand newspapers daily. According to the publications, the public loved the intelligent way in which Bill Watterson, the creator of the story, described the philosophical dialogues between Calvin and Hobbes.
Despite the frustration of Calvin and Hobbes fans, Bill Watterson said in an interview that he ended his work "at the right time", as he did not want it to become "boring".
In the interview, granted in 2010, Watterson stated that his inspiration ceased after 10 years of work.
“This is not as difficult to understand as people think. At the end of 10 years, I had said pretty much everything I got there to say.”
“It's always better to leave the party early. If I had gone along with the popularity of the strip and repeated myself for another five, 10 or 20 years, people now
they would "mourn" Calvin and Hobbes and soon abandon boring, old strips like mine for fresher, more lively talent. And I would agree with them,” said Bill Watterson.
The author had already made some similar comments when he was asked about the end of the series in mid-1995, while the last episodes were being released.
In addition, Watterson has already turned down several invitations to direct films, series and animations about the pair of intelligent friends.
According to comics experts, Bill Watterson's decision was sensible, as it prevented the series from "losing its luster", which would overshadow all previous work.
Nowadays, 'Calvin and Hobbes' is considered a masterpiece of comics, while Bill is seen as one of the most brilliant comic artists of all time.
