Sawfish species are currently listed as critically endangered in the world. For Brazil, the risk situation is no different. The two species of sawfish, Pristis pectinata and Pristis perotteti, which in the past lived along almost the entire Brazilian coast, are now restricted to just a few states in Northern Brazil, a region where commercial fishing for the animal continues to occur.
In the Northeast, more specifically in Bahia, retired fishermen report the capture of many sawfish a few decades ago. But in the last twenty years, not one specimen has been captured. There are young fishermen who have never seen a sawfish in their lives.
Faced with this sad situation, organizations dedicated to the conservation of fauna, as well as many researchers, have been striving to save the sawfish from extinction in order to maintain the balance. marine ecological.
