Where does the word “closet” come from?

In the past, people kept their clothes in chests and crates, always horizontally. Around the 9th and 10th centuries, the first vertical cabinets appeared. They had this format, as they were made to store shotguns – hence the name “cabinet”, derived from “weapon”. Furniture has always been made of wood, an abundant material and relatively easy to handle.
