The greatest mountain known to man is not on Earth: it is on Mars. The scientific name for the mountain – which is actually a volcano – is Olympus Mons, which in Latin means Mount Olympus. It is 27km long above the surface of Mars: just for comparison, Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain on Earth's surface, is 8km long. Nineteenth-century scientists already knew of the existence of Mount Olympus, but more detailed photos were not taken until 1971, when an American space probe reached Mars.
