Green tie and red tie behave similarly. Males are territorial and defend their surroundings for floral resources, which vary widely throughout the year. They fight a lot. In the rainy season, they prefer to eat plants from the mint family, for example. When resources become scarce, they exploit other plant species.
Females use capture lines to feed, going from flower to flower. They are not bullies like males and hard to be seen. They build the nest, hatch the egg and take care of the chick. Sometimes they catch insects for food because they need protein. They bathe in rivers and waters that spill from waterfalls.
The green-tie and red-tie hummingbirds are symbols of Serra do Espinhaço and Chapada Diamantina. Visitors from all over the world pass through the regions to discover these Brazilian pearls.
