In 1992, US astronomers Alex Wolszczan and Dale Frail discovered two exoplanets. They were the first planets found outside our solar system. But instead of orbiting a star like the Sun, these planets orbited a stellar body called a pulsar.
In January 1995, Swiss astronomer Didier Queloz should have been watching space. But it rained a lot, and he decided to go to the library to study what he had already observed on other days.
That's when he realized that there could be a planet around a star, called 51 Pegasi. With more data and analysis, he saw that he was right: he discovered a new exoplanet, around a star similar to the Sun!
